Clinics & Services

Asthma

If you are an asthmatic patient you should be seen by our practice nurse at least once a year for an asthma review. During the consultation she will discuss your symptoms and medication and find out how you are managing your asthma. She will check to see how you are using your asthma medication and will want to check your inhaler technique to ensure you are getting optimum levels of medication. This is also a good opportunity for you to discuss any worries or concerns you have about your asthma.

Cervical Screening

The NHS Cervical Screening Programme in England offers free tests to all women aged between 25 and 64 who are registered with their GP. This includes women who have had the HPV vaccination, as the vaccine does not guarantee complete protection against cervical cancer.

Women should normally be invited for cervical screening at the following times:

  • by the age of 25 you will receive your first invitation for screening
  • when you are 25 to 49 years old you are invited for screening every three years
  • when you are 50 to 64 years old you are invited for screening every five years
  • when you are aged 65 or over you are only screened if you have not been screened since you were 50 or if you have had recent abnormal test results

If you have not had a cervical screening test within the appropriate time please telephone the practice on 03000 33 22 33 to book an appointment with our practice nurse. When you call please let the reception staff know that you wish to book a smear test.

Childhood Immunisations

If you're not sure whether you or your child has had all your routine vaccinations, please ask our practice nurse to find out for you. It may be possible to "catch up" later in life. To book an appointment please telephone 03000 33 22 33 and ask the reception staff to book an appointment with our practice nurse. She will be able to look at your or your child’s health records and tell you exactly what vaccines have been completed.

Chlamydia Screening

Chlamydia is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the UK. It’s passed on from one person to another through unprotected sex (sex without a condom).

If you have any symptoms or are worried that you may have Chlamydia please book an appointment with our practice nurse or one of our doctors. They will offer support and advice and can take you through the treatment process. Please be assured that anything you discuss will be treated in the strictest confidence by staff at the practice.

Pregnancy, antenatal and postnatal care and advice for you and your baby

Finding out you are pregnant can be an exciting and worrying time but this link provides a wealth of information, advice, hints and supportive material to help you through your pregnancy, labour and early years of being a parent.

At West Herts Medical Centre we welcome any patients who wish to discuss any concerns or questions about getting pregnant, being pregnant or bringing up young children.

When you find out you may be pregnant book an appointment to see one of our doctors who will refer you to the Community Midwifery Service and our midwife Kate Rudd who is based in the antenatal department at Hemel Hempstead General Hospital. Once informed, she will take over the care of your pregnancy.

You should still come to the practice in the usual way for any appointments regarding any health matters.

Once your baby is born we will write to you offering you and your baby a postnatal check-up. This usually takes place between 6-8 weeks post delivery. The check is carried out by Dr Maria Godfrey and usually takes around 40 minutes for yourself and baby.

Family Planning

We offer a wide range of contraceptive advice to patients. If you would like to discuss further please book an appointment with one of our doctors or our practice nurse.

The practice does not offer an IUCD, implant insertion or removal service. This is something that we are hoping to bring to our patients in the near future.

In the meantime if you would like to have a coil fitted please attend Marlowes Health Centre where you will be offered an appointment with one of the clinical staff. They will discuss the options with you and arrange an appointment to come back for the IUCD to be fitted.

Diabetes

Diabetes is a life long condition that causes a persons blood sugar levels to become too high. There are two main types of diabetes, Type I and Type II. We care for patients with both types of diabetes. If you have diabetes you should attend the practice regularly for monitoring, this is usually carried out by Dr Godfrey.

Flu Vaccinations

Every October all patients over 65 and those with chronic diseases such as diabetes and asthma, bronchitis and heart disease will be invited to be protected.

Mammography Screening (50–64 years)

The medical centre encourages all women who are called for screening to attend. If you have any worries or concerns please contact one of the doctors or our nurse.

Practice Nurse

You may make an appointment with our nurse for the following procedures: general nursing advice, dressings, removal of stitches, minor injuries, injections, children’s immunisations, travel advice and vaccinations, family planning, well-woman and well-man checks. Blood tests, routine blood-pressure monitoring, ear syringing and ECG's can be done at the doctor’s request.

Minor Surgery

Your doctor is able to carry out many procedures at the medical centre and will arrange a time to do this after an initial consultation.

Pneumonia Vaccinations

These are for patients over 65 and those with lung or heart disease. One vaccination only is necessary unless advised otherwise by your doctor.
